Tony Hansberry II: The Man Who Decided to Change Lives While He Was Still a Kid

Tony Hansberry II: The Man Who Decided to Change Lives While He Was Still a Kid

February 10, 2018

At just 14 years old, while a freshman at the Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School of Medical Arts (Seriously, what even is this school? You clearly already have to be a genius to even attend), located in Jacksonville, Florida, Tony Hansberry II came up with a surgical technique to help reduce the risk of complications in patients during surgical procedures.

The technique improves how the vaginal cuff is sutured after a hysterectomy, reducing surgery time, pain and complications. Called the “Hansberry Stitch” cuts surgery time by one third of the usual time.

Tony was encouraged to take advanced classes in medicate at Darnell-Cookman and came up with the surgery procedure because he wanted to help both patients and surgeons.

Today, Tony is 22 and studied chemistry at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) with the hopes of being a well-respected and competent neurosurgeon someday.
